Day 2–Dublin

Day 1 was, as usual, getting to the destination.  Left home at 7:30pm on Tuesday, errands, get to sleep in hotel around midnight, up again at 4am for a 7:30 flight to Dublin on US Air via Charlotte.  All routine, in fact the landings were pillow landings.  Nice after the Asiana debacle at SFO a few weeks ago.

Our Air BnB hosts picked us up at the airport and 5 minutes later we were settled in our room.  A bit of background.  We used Airbnb when we were in Malaysia last year. Basically, you stay in someone’s house, apartment, flat.  Your own room and bath, frequently breakfast; all for roughly half what you would pay for a hotel room or higher-end Bed and Breakfast.  Sinead and Des host with their two dogs, Timmy and Corny.  We are a 20 minute bus ride from Dublin, Des took us in to the city this morning, but we caught the return bus back to the flat.  It should have cost us around $4 each, we had the right amount of Euros, but in paper and coin, the bus only takes coin, so the driver let us go for free.  Irish are nice.

A few pictures follow to give you a flavor of Dublin.  Cool, cloudy, sprinkles at times, but very pleasant.  Temple Bar is the tourist section of Dublin, The name indicates neither religion or alcohol.  Temple was one of the rich aristocrats when Dublin was growing and the bar refers to where the ships docked centuries ago.  But, the name give one a great excuse to go pub crawling.

Flowers and cathedrals everywhere.  We took a 2 hour walking tour of Dublin, and we learned that due to location and resources it was a whipping boy for England for centuries.  Ireland and Northern Ireland, (a separate country) still feel the affects of sectarian violence.

We attended an ‘evensong’ in St. Patrick’s cathedral, sand sculpture competition, very cool

A  typical street scene, (on a Thursday afternoon!)  Too tired for much more description.  We go back tomorrow, a better run down what we saw and experienced in tomorrow’s blog
